Using an anonymous VPN for iPhone and iPad has a couple of uses. They're not very commonly used now, but as the government, advertisers, and other users get nosier and force themselves into our every day private lives, the idea of 'anonymity online' becomes more and more attractive. When you connect to the internet, especially when using a mobile device on public wifi, there are certain risks you take. Using an anonymous VPN reduces these risks.
First, let's get some of the uses you might now have heard of out of the way.
  1. Change IP to access blocked sites  2. Secure the privacy of business and personal data  3. Protect yourself from eavesdropping and hacking on shared networks

You might have guessed by now that each of these are somewhat interrelated. Actually being anonymous online means that you have to change your IP address. Changing your IP means that you need to replace it with another IP. Changing your IP also means that you can't be found on shared networks, and are no longer a target for eavesdropping and packet sniffing. This also means that sharing business or private information over an unsecured network can be private. The only thing that's not mentioned is that an anonymous VPN will also encrypt your data.
In fact, when you set up a VPN connection through a VPN service, there will be two parts to your VPN (usually). There will be a VPN tunnel part, and an encryption part.
For a VPN for iPhone and iPad, you will be using PPTP or L2TP as you style of VPN tunnel. PPTP is easier to set up, but L2TP is better protected against attack. PPTP uses PPP encryption and L2TP uses IPSec encryption which uses a 168-bit code. Can you imagine how hard it is to crack a 168 number long code? And remember, that the data that's encrypted on your iPhone is sent through the L2TP VPN tunnel, adding two more layers of data protection.
That's why for true anonymity online, the L2TP/IPSec VPN is recommended for iPhone and iPad. Why even offer the PPTP VPN? Well, like I mentioned above, not all users want a VPN connection on their iOS device for anonymity. Some people want to unblock sites, and some people want to change IP to gain access to foreign websites. VPN services will offer both, and most of the time there's no price difference. Some services offer a full package deal where you can switch freely between servers. In fact, lots of places offer VPN servers from around the world so you can virtually reside in Turkey in one moment, in the UK next, or even find a VPN server from your country to make use of the VPN anonymity without using a foreign IP.
